Steps

  1. 1. Make cleaning solution

Cut 1-2 lemons or limes into slices, then squeeze juices into the microwavable bowl. Add the squeezed slices and 2 cups of water.

  1. 2. Heat the solution in the microwave

Put the bowl in the microwave with high power for a few minutes until the solution boils and steam forms.

  1. 3. Let the steam cool for minutes

Turn off the microwave and let the steam sit inside for several minutes. The steam will work to loosen all the grimes and food remains.

  1. 4. Clean the microwave

Take out of the bowl, the turntable and any other removable components. Dip a microfiber cloth or sponge in the lemon solution and then use it to wipe away the interior of your microwave. For the stubborn stains, dip the damp microfiber cloth/sponge in some baking soda which can help loosen the dirt.

Follow the same procedures to clean the exterior and interior door of the microwave. As for the microwave turntable, you can wash it in a sink with some dishwashing liquid. Rinse and dry the turntable with a clean microfiber cloth and then reassemble it.

How to remove odor in the microwave

Sometimes your microwave may be too smelly that a simple clean-up doesn’t solve the problem, but don’t worry, you can remove that smell simply with the material you already have in the kitchen. Just place a bowl of baking soda in the microwave and leave it overnight. The baking soda will absorb the smells naturally. If there’s only a slight smell, leave the microwave door open to let fresh air come in.

How often should you clean your microwave?

How often you should clean your microwave depends on the way and frequency you use it. Generally speaking, you should give it a clean-up once a week. For easier cleaning, you can also check after each use if there’re any splatters and spills and then remove them right away.
