Why You Can’t Drink Too Much Coffee
Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, and it has been become an essential part of daily life. As estimated, nearly 85 percent of Americans drink at least one cup per day; If for older adults, there would be more cups; and correspondingly, their caffeine intake averages 380 milligrams, or about four cups at 100 milligrams per cup. Though coffee has been touted for several benefits, like promoting a healthy heart, to drink too much coffee can be somewhat harmful too.
Among daily popular drinks, coffee contains the most caffeine. Generally, the recommended amount of caffeine is usually 400 milligrams per day for healthy adults, though it differs for everyone based on age, weight, and overall health. So this makes it difficult to know the exact amount of caffeine that can lead to overdose.
Symptoms if you drink too much coffee:
Some symptoms may not immediately alert you if you ingest too much at one time, including dizziness, increased thirst, insomnia, headache, fever and irritability.
While, some other symptoms seem more severe and call for immediate medical treatment, including trouble breathing, vomiting, hallucinations, confusion, chest pain, irregular or fast heartbeat, uncontrollable muscle movements and convulsions.
What to do if you drink too much coffee?
If for mild symptoms, drinking water and eating foods high in potassium or magnesium, such as bananas or dark leafy greens, will help you out.
If for severe symptoms, you’ll likely be advised to go for a doctor and tell him the amount of caffeinated items you consumed prior to having symptoms.
- Avoid the consumption of excessive amounts of coffee, less than 300 mg caffeine per day;
- Do make sure that you’re not sensitive to caffeine.
