Water takes up 79% of your body. Most people may not realize the importance of water until they’ve lost plenty of it and start to feel thirsty, tired, or extremely hot. Without adequate hydration, your ability to behave well in a workout can also be impaired, and your risk of suffering from heat exhaustion may get higher. Don’t drink water until you feel thirsty, especially during a workout that concerns a lot of perspiration.

Exercise will take away much water from your body, so it is necessary to drink water to avoid dehydration. Basically, you should take in 7-10 ounces of water every 15 minutes or so, according to the American Council on Exercise.

If you’re taking part in strenuous exercise –like a marathon, for over two hours or in a hot and humid environment, regular water replenishment may not suffice. Luckily, you have another great option: a sports drink. Besides water, it contains enough carbs and sodiums that can help to maintain the function of your muscles and stabilize your blood glucose level. Just make sure that your sports drink contains 6g of carbs and at least 20mg of sodium per ml.

Of course, the amount of water that should be taken varies on different people. If you sweat a lot more than others, you can drink another 10 ounces to make sure you won’t get dehydrated during a workout.

It’s also really important to stay hydrated before and after a workout, which can get you prepared for the exercise and help remove waste out of your muscles and joints. Normally, you need 17-20 ounces of water before you exercise and about 20 ounces of water for every pound of weight loss afterward. For more specific comparisons, you can weigh yourself both in advance and afterward.

In the case when you forget to take a bottled of water on you or water is not available when exercising, don’t worry about dehydration, as long as the exercise is not that vigorous and won’t make you sweat a lot. Even if it is a one-hour vigorous workout, you’re totally OK if you’ve drunk the recommended water beforehand and you’re well prepared for the workout.
